Today would have been Princess Margaret‘s 84th birthday. Queen Elizabeth‘s younger sister is one of my all-time favorite royals. She was beautiful, glamorous (Mick Jagger was a close pal), famously hedonistic (you try finding photos of any other royals smoking in public, let alone naked in the bathtub wearing only jewels), and haughty as hell.
One of a kind, that Margaret Rose. We salute you.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway also celebrated a birthday this week. Facts I learned from Hello‘s piece on her: in true progressive Scandinavian-style, she already had a child when she married Crown Prince Haakon. She’s also an avid Twitter user. (Still waiting for Kate’s feed.)
Royalty-obsessed? I assume you are, if you’re reading this post. (Or, maybe you’re just bored at work and are like, “Eh. Nadine does these royalty thingies every week. I guess I’ll read it.”) Whatever the case may be, my friend Katherine Longhi of The Dual Life was there a couple weeks ago when William, Kate, and Harry visited the Tower of London to see the ceramic poppies installation–and she has tips for you on how to effectively ditch the crowds and see royalty up close and personal.
Said tips are only helpful if the royals are due to appear near you; these methods will not work in, say, Iowa. Katherine does not yet have pointers on conjuring royalty, State Farm-commercial-style, but she should totally get on that. (“Like a good neighbor, KMiddy’s there!“)
Finally, Prince William has decided to become an East Anglian Air Ambulance pilot in the spring, and will be donating his salary to charity. He’ll be deployed into emergency medical situations and will work year round on four-days-on, four-days-off eight-hour shifts. His home base will be Cambridge Airport, which is very close to William and Kate’s new, almost-renovated country manor Amner Hall.
I’ve been waiting for them to make the shift to the countryside, mimicking William’s own childhood. While he was raised in Kensington Palace with Diana, he spent many of his weekends and holidays at Charles‘s country home Highgrove. They’ll want a similar privacy for Prince George as he grows up–so even if Kensington Palace remains their “official” residence, Amner Hall will likely be nearer and dearer to their hearts as “home.”
